Welcome Music Workshop – Mikrorhythmische Gestaltung von Groove | 11. April | 11-16 Uhr | Zinnschmelze

Viele der ausdrucksstärksten Grooves basieren auf dem Phänomen von Swing – einer asymmetrischen Phrasierung von Subdivisions, die von einem quantisierten Raster als Idealzustand abweicht.

Einfacher ausgedrückt: Die einzelnen Noten der Subdivisions werden nicht gleich, sondern unterschiedlich lang gespielt. Bekannte Beispiele aus afrodiasporischen Musiken sind Swung Eighths, Gnawa Triplets & Brazilian 16th.

In diesem Workshop schauen wir uns verschiedene Formen dieses Swings an. Wir arbeiten mit einem Modell, das uns hilft, diese Phrasierung besser zu verstehen. Wir lernen das Feel dieser Rhythmen zu hören und zu spüren, um sie anschließend gemeinsam zu üben und eigene Grooves zu entwickeln.

Dabei verstehen wir Swing nicht als Stilmerkmal, sondern als ein strukturelles Prinzip rhythmischer Gestaltung – als Klangfarbe des Pulses.

Der Workshop wird geleitet von Patrick Huss. Er ist Perkussionist, Komponist und Forscher aus Hamburg und arbeitet zur Zeit an seiner Promotion zum Thema „A generalized theory of Swing“.

Dieser Workshop richtet sich an Musikerinnen und Musiker unterschiedlicher Niveaus, grundlegende musikalische Erfahrung ist jedoch von Vorteil. Wir freuen uns, wenn ihr eure eigenen Instrumente mitbringt. Vor Ort stehen ein Klavier und ein paar verschiedene Rhythmusinstrumente (Cajón, Schlagzeug, Conga-Trommeln) zur Verfügung.

Many of the most expressive grooves are based on the phenomenon of swing – an asymmetrical phrasing of subdivisions that deviates from a quantized grid as an ideal state.

Put more simply: the individual notes of the subdivisions are not played with equal length, but with varying durations. Well-known examples from Afrodiasporic music traditions include Swung Eighths, Gnawa Triplets & Brazilian 16ths.

In this workshop, we will explore various forms of this swing. We will work with a model that helps us better understand this type of phrasing. We will learn to hear and feel the feel of these rhythms, in order to then practice them together and develop our own grooves.

In doing so, we understand swing not as a stylistic feature, but as a structural principle of rhythmic design – as the tone color of the pulse.

The workshop will be led by Patrick Huss. He is a percussionist, composer, and researcher from Hamburg, currently working on his doctorate on the topic of „A Generalized Theory of Swing.“

This workshop is aimed at musicians of various levels, though basic musical experience is an advantage. We encourage you to bring your own instruments. On-site, a piano and a selection of rhythm instruments (cajón, drum kit, conga drums) will be available.

Welcome Music Session – Folk Bridge | 12. März | 20-23 Uhr | Zinnschmelze

Im März machen wir eine kleine Folk-Weltreise. Denn die Musiker unseres Openers Folk Bridge sind alle in ganz verschiedenen musikalischen Traditionen beheimatet. Die fünfköpfige Band ist aus der zufälligen Begegnung entstanden und schlägt musikalische Brücken zwischen den Traditionen Nord- und Südamerikas, Irlands und der Andenregion.

Ihre Musik verbindet Elemente aus Bluegrass, Jazz, irischem Folk und andiner Folklore. So entsteht ein ganz eigener Sound, der von von Instrumenten wie Western-Gitarre, E-Bass und Ukulele, aber auch Five-String-Banjo, Mundharmonika, Tin Whistle sowie den südamerikanischen Flöten Zampoña und Quena getragen wird. Ziel von Folk Bridge ist es, diese unterschiedlichen Einflüsse zu einer eigenen musikalischen Sprache zu verschmelzen und dabei eine Balance zwischen Tradition und eigener Interpretation zu schaffen.

Im Anschluss können sich alle, die möchten, auf der Bühne in die Musik einbringen.

In March, we’re embarking on a little folk world tour. The musicians of our opening act Folk Bridge each come from very different musical traditions. The five-piece band grew out of a chance encounter and builds musical bridges between the traditions of North and South America, Ireland, and the Andean region.

Their music combines elements of bluegrass, jazz, Irish folk, and Andean folklore, creating a truly distinctive sound carried by instruments such as western guitar, electric bass, and ukulele, as well as five-string banjo, harmonica, tin whistle, and the South American flutes zampoña and quena. Folk Bridge’s aim is to blend these diverse influences into a musical language of their own, striking a balance between tradition and personal interpretation.

Welcome Music Session – Meadows‘ Fellows | 12. Februar | 20-23 Uhr | Zinnschmelze

Dem grauen Stadt-Winter setzen wir in unserer Februar Session die Musik von Meadows‘ Fellows entgegen.

Meadows’ Fellows ist ein Duo aus Hamburg, das aus folkloristischen Wurzeln, improvisierten Klangräumen und subtiler Elektronik einen eigenen, atmosphärischen Sound formt und als Opener im Februar die Musikwiese wachsen lässt.

In einer Zeit, in der urbane Landschaften von Beton, und Hochbauten dominiert werden, widmen sich Meadows’ Fellows der Suche nach musikalischen Ausdrucksformen für die stille, beharrliche Kraft der Natur – für ihr Durchbrechen und Erblühen.

Meadows’ Fellows erschafft intime, zugleich weitläufige Klangwelten zwischen Tradition und Moderne.

Meadows’ Fellows is a duo from Hamburg that shapes its own atmospheric sound from folkloric roots, improvised soundscapes, and subtle electronics. As the February opener, they let the musical meadow grow.

At a time when urban landscapes are dominated by concrete and high-rise buildings, Meadows’ Fellows dedicate themselves to the search for musical forms of expression for the quiet, persistent power of nature—for its breaking through and blossoming.

Meadows’ Fellows create intimate yet expansive sonic worlds between tradition and modernity.

Welcome Music Session: Jubiläumsfeier | 13.11.25 | 18 bis 24 Uhr | Zinnschmelze

Wie super cool ist es, dass es die Welcome Music Session schon seit zehn Jahren gibt und monatlich Menschen und Musik zusammenbringt?

Im Jahr 2015 hatte Geschäftsführerin Sonja die Idee, einen Raum zu schaffen für Menschen mit (und ohne) Fluchterfahrung, in dem sie den Alltag vergessen und mit anderen Menschen zusammen kommen können. Über die Jahre haben sich bei der Session Musiker*innen aus der ganzen Welt kennen gelernt und gemeinsame musikalische Projekte gestartet. Manche Menschen kommen seit Jahren jeden Monat zu jeder Session und jedes Mal sind auch neue Menschen dabei, die noch nie vorher da waren.

Dass das Projekt über all die Jahre hinweg so ein Wohlfühlort ist und bleibt, ist auch euer Verdienst. Danke, dass ihr uns so lange treu seid und immer mit Neugier, offenen Ohren und Respekt an der Session teil nehmt! Genau das möchten wir mit euch feiern.

Jubiläumsession am 13.11.2025

Wir haben uns ein besonderes, ausgedehntes Programm überlegt:

18 Uhr – Akkustisches Warm-Up

Wir starten um 18 Uhr mit einem akkustischen Warm-Up: Kommt vorbei, zupft ein wenig auf der Gitarre, schlagt eine Handtrommel oder singt ein paar Melodien. Es gibt keinen Performance-Druck, weil die Bühne noch nicht bespielt wird. Wir sitzen einfach gemütlich zusammen, schnacken und genießen akkustische Klänge und eure Gesellschaft.

19:15 Uhr – Session Opener: WelCombo

Um 19:15 Uhr eröffnet dann unsere Hausband WelCombo die Session und führt musikalische Fäden aus der Ukraine, Syrien, Tadschikistan, Lettland und dem Rest der Welt zusammen. Und strickt daraus die perfekte Grundlage für eine globale Jam Session.

20 Uhr – Session

Ab 20 Uhr geht es in die Welcome Music Session über und ihr seid alle auf der Bühne willkommen und habt die Gelegenheit eure schönsten Riffs und witzigsten Rhythmen zu zeigen – und vor allem euch von den anderen Musiker*innen inspirieren zu lassen.

22 bis 24 Uhr – DJ Set von Tutku Kaplan

Von 22 bis 24 Uhr spielt Tutku Kaplan ein DJ Set und wir feiern die vergangenen und hoffentlich kommenden zehn Jahre der Welcome Music Session.

Kommt jederzeit vorbei und bringt eure Freund*innen mit. Wir freuen uns auf euch!

We’re celebrating 10 years of the Welcome Music Session!

How amazing is it that the Welcome Music Session has been bringing people and music together every month for ten years now?

In 2015, our managing director Sonja had the idea to create a space for people with (and without) refugee experience — a place where they could forget everyday life and connect with others. Over the years, musicians from all over the world have met through the Session and started joint musical projects. Some people have been coming every month for years, and every time, there are also new faces joining who have never been there before.

That the project has remained such a welcoming, feel-good place over all these years is thanks to you as well. Thank you for your loyalty, your curiosity, your open ears, and your respectful participation! That’s exactly what we want to celebrate with you.

Anniversary Session – November 13, 2025

We’ve planned a special extended program for this occasion:

6:00 PM – Acoustic Warm-Up
Drop by, strum a guitar, play a hand drum, or sing a few melodies. There’s no pressure to perform — the stage won’t be open yet. We’ll just hang out, chat, and enjoy some acoustic sounds and good company.

7:15 PM – WelCombo Opens the Session
Our house band WelCombo will kick things off, weaving musical threads from Ukraine, Syria, Tajikistan, Latvia, and the rest of the world into the perfect foundation for a global jam session.

8:00 PM – Welcome Music Session
The stage is open for everyone! You’re invited to share your best riffs and funniest rhythms — and most importantly, to be inspired by the other musicians.

10:00 PM – Midnight: DJ Set by Tutku Kaplan
We’ll dance and celebrate the past — and hopefully many more — ten years of the Welcome Music Session.

Im Oktober haben wir einen ganz besonderen Workshop für euch: Wilbert Zumba und Annalena Doss zeigen euch wie ihr ohne Vorkenntnisse und ganz intuitiv Musik machen könnt.

Come and dive into the power of music created in the here and now

In this 4-hour workshop, we will explore intuitive music creation using nothing but our bodies, voices, and presence. Together, we’ll build soundscapes and rhythmic dialogues that emerge naturally from the moment — no scores, no pressure, no need to “perform.”

At Intuisound, we believe that music and human connection are inseparable. Our sessions are invitations to rediscover yourself and others through deep listening, vocal play, rhythm games, improvisation, and spontaneous musical flow.

Our main inspiration is the Brazilian methodology Música do Círculo, enriched by the expressive vocal freedom of Rhiannon’s Vocal River and the raw presence of Liór Shoov.

Wilbert Zumba: A curious and eclectic soul, Wilbert believes that genuine human connection is what we need most today. As a certified Música do Círculo facilitator, his Brazilian roots, joyful energy, and rhythmic expertise bring life to every circle he leads.

Das Duo, bestehend aus Katharina Gildenstern (Gesang, Gitarre) und Julio Celis (Perkussion, Gesang), präsentiert ein vielfältiges Repertoire traditioneller und moderner Musik Lateinamerikas: Boleros, Cumbia, Reggea und Tangos schaffen eine berührende Mischung aus Melancholie und Leichtigkeit, die zum Tanzen und Träumen einlädt.

Wir sind aus der Sommerpause zurück!

Den Auftakt zur zweiten Jahreshälfte macht das Gitarrenduo in.dia. Diogo Passos und Hugo Gamboias verbinden das klassische und portugiesische Gitarrenspiel. Sie lassen mit traditionellen sowie eigenen Kompositionen Genregrenzen verschwimmen und ziehen ihr Publikum in ihren Bann. Die Konzerte des Duos sind eine Hommage an unterschiedliche Musikkulturen und verweben Melodien, die durch Emotion und kulturelle Tiefe berühren.

Im Anschluss ist die Bühne für alle geöffnet.

The second half of the year kicks off with the guitar duo in.dia. Diogo Passos and Hugo Gamboias blend classical and Portuguese guitar playing. With both traditional and original compositions, they blur the boundaries between genres and captivate their audience. Welcome Music Concert: ELBA | 10. Juli | 20-23 Uhr | Zinnschmelze

Bevor es jetzt bald wirklich in die Sommerpause gehet, laden wir euch zu einem Welcome Music Concert von der ukrainischen Band ELBA ein.

ELBA ist eine Musikgruppe, die in Hamburg von Musiker*innen aus der Ukraine gegründet wurde, von denen die meisten aufgrund des Krieges nach Deutschland gezogen sind.

Die Band experimentiert mit verschiedenen Stilrichtungen und verbindet Pop-Rock, Pop-Folk und Rap-Pop. Das Markenzeichen ihres Sounds ist der mehrstimmige Gesang, der sich harmonisch mit den Melodien von Blasinstrumenten wie Flöte, Saxophon und Piccolo verwebt. Ein besonderes Klanghighlight ist die ukrainische Sopilka, die der modernen Musik eine authentische, folkloristische Note verleiht.

ELBA spielt sowohl eigene Songs – auf Ukrainisch sowie teilweise auf Englisch und Deutsch – als auch Coverversionen bekannter ukrainischer und internationaler Hits. Durch kreative, unkonventionelle Arrangements verleihen sie den vertrauten Melodien eine neue, frische Klangfarbe.

The Ukrainian band ELBA is a music group founded in Hamburg by musicians from Ukraine, most of whom moved to Germany due to the war.
The band experiments with various styles, blending pop-rock, pop-folk, and rap-pop. Their signature sound is characterized by multi-voiced harmonies that seamlessly intertwine with melodies from wind instruments such as the flute, saxophone, and piccolo. A special highlight of their sound is the Ukrainian sopilka, which adds an authentic, folkloric touch to modern music.

ELBA performs both original songs—in Ukrainian, as well as partially in English and German—and cover versions of well-known Ukrainian and international hits. Through creative, unconventional arrangements, they give familiar melodies a fresh, new sound.
